PARK(ing) Day Installation - Community Design Stand

Los Altos PARK(ing) Day 2012
PARK(ing) Day started in 2005 by the ReBAR Group in San Francisco, born out of the idea that parking spaces could be public spaces.  Since then, PARK(ing) Day has become a world wide movement, with hundreds of installations created on the third Friday of September each year.  The success of these demonstration spaces has even spawned permanent parklets in San Francisco, Denver, New York

This proposal is for Palo Alto's first temporary parklet and PARK(ing) Day installation. The Community Design Stand is meant to to encourage Downtown residents to gather informally and provide input on community issues.

There will be several installations in mid-late August throughout the Downtown North neighborhood, culminating in an installation on University Avenue on PARK(ing) Day, September 20, 2013.  Each installation will pose a different question such as "What is the biggest challenge facing Downtown?" "What do you like best about downtown Palo Alto?"  "If you could start any businesses/services/amenity downtown, what would it be?"  Residents & passers by will be invited to provide input in written or drawn form and will be rewarded with a sweet treat provided by local businesses or neighborhood residents.

The physical design of the parklet is meant to be flexible, easy to assemble/disassemble, and compact to store.  Two or three wood and metal boxes will be painted in bright colors (to signal to drivers).  Instead of simulated turf or a real grass surface, 72 FLOR tiles will carpet the parking spot. Tables, chairs and umbrellas will complete the public space.  Donated garden/house plants will complete the space. Check back soon for official dates/locations
